The Sanskrit word, jala, means “water”. The original meaning of neti is “to guide”. It has also come to mean “nasal cleansing”. Therefore, jala neti means guiding water through the nasal passages to cleanse them.
Jala neti is a traditional Ayurvedic and Yogic practice that clears the nose and sinus passages through nasal irrigation.
Sea salt is dissolved into warm, pure water in a neti pot, a tool specifically designed for this purpose.
The head is tilted forward and to the side and the solution is poured into one nostril and allowed to pour out the other, thereby clearing the nasal passages and sinuses of excess mucous, toxins and debris along the way. Shiva Sutra Neti Pot
Using a neti pot is relatively simple. Here’s a basic guide on how to use it:
- Prepare the saline solution: Fill the neti pot with a mixture of warm distilled water or previously boiled water and a saline solution. You can use pre-packaged saline packets specifically designed for nasal irrigation or make your own saline solution by dissolving a quarter to half a teaspoon of non-iodized salt (such as sea salt or kosher salt) in 8 ounces of warm water. Ensure that the saline solution is at a comfortable lukewarm temperature.
- Position yourself over a sink: Stand over a sink or bathtub and tilt your head slightly forward. Turn your head to one side so that your nostril is facing down towards the sink.
- Insert the Shiva Sutra Neti Pot’s spout: Gently insert the spout of the neti pot into your upper nostril. Make sure it creates a comfortable seal to prevent leakage.
- Pour the saline solution: Slowly pour the saline solution into your upper nostril. Keep your mouth open and breathe through your mouth throughout the process. The saline solution will flow through your nasal passages and out of the lower nostril, flushing out mucus, allergens, and debris.
- Switch sides: After using half of the saline solution, switch to the other nostril and repeat the process.
- Empty your nostrils: Once you have used all the saline solution, gently blow your nose to clear out any remaining saline solution and mucus. Repeat the process as needed.
Clean the neti pot: After each use, thoroughly wash the neti pot with soap and warm water, and allow it to air dry to prevent bacterial growth.
It’s essential to use sterile water and follow proper hygiene practices when using a neti pot to avoid the risk of infection. If you experience any discomfort or irritation while using a neti pot, discontinue use and consult with a healthcare professional.
